Chapter 11 - The Phantom Heir

The engagement ring on my finger sparkled under the penthouse lights, a three-carat promise that the nightmare was finally over. The media was calling us Manhattan’s ultimate power couple. For forty-eight hours, I allowed myself to believe in fairy tales.

Then the black envelope arrived.

It was delivered directly to Adrian’s private desk inside a wax-sealed casing, stamped with the crest of the Kane family trust—a trust that was supposed to have been frozen upon his father’s death fifteen years ago.

Adrian tore it open, his expression shifting from calm authority to utter horror. Inside were three items: a certified DNA profile, a deed to twenty percent of Blackwell & Reed’s stock, and a hand-written note on heavy parchment.

“You think you own the crown, little brother? Check the bloodline.”

“What is it?” I asked, my pulse accelerating as I stepped beside him.

Adrian’s knuckles turned white as he gripped the desk. “My father didn't just leave an empire. He had a secret son. A older brother I was told died at birth.”

Before I could process his words, my phone buzzed violently. It was an urgent alert from Rikers Island Correctional Facility. The high-security transport carrying Julian Sterling to state prison had been ambushed on the Queensboro Bridge. Julian hadn't just escaped—he had been pulled out by a team of heavily armed operatives.

Suddenly, the lights across Tribeca flickered and plunged into shadow. High above the skyline, the digital billboards on Times Square—which usually flashed corporate ads—cut to a dark red emergency broadcast.

A male voice echoed over the news networks, cold, refined, and terrifyingly familiar: “Adrian Kane has built his empire on a lie. And Clara Vance’s daughter is the key to taking it all down.”

I rushed to the glass window, clutching my chest. Down on the street, dark SUVs were pulling up to the security gates of our building.
