Chapter 14 - The Stolen Heiress

“You will have to kill me first,” Adrian snapped, taking a step forward.

Before Eleanor could pull the trigger, a smoke grenade bounced off the concrete floor, exploding into a cloud of blinding white tear gas.

Tires screeched violently. A black van roared into the garage. Masked men poured out, firing silenced weapons into the air. Panic broke out in the underground cavern. Adrian tackled Eleanor to the ground as shots echoed off the concrete walls.

I grabbed Mia, turning to run toward the armored sedan, but a heavy hand clamped over my mouth from behind.

I hit, kicked, and bit with everything I had, but the grip was iron-tight. I was thrown roughly onto the cold pavement as a figure in a dark tactical suit snatched Mia out of my arms.

“Mommy!” Mia screamed, her small voice echoing terrifyingly off the stone. “Mommy, help!”

“Mia!” I shrieked, scrambling forward on my hands and knees, but a heavy boots struck my chest, knocking the air from my lungs.

Through my tear-filled eyes, I saw Julian Sterling standing over me, a dark, victorious sneer on his face. He picked up Gerald the elephant—which had fallen onto the wet pavement—and tossed it onto my lap.

“Thanks for taking care of my investment for six years, Clara,” Julian mocked, stepping back into the black van as the doors slammed shut.

The van tore out of the parking garage, leaving behind the smell of burning rubber and the sound of my shattered heart screaming into the empty night.
