Chapter 4 - Sanctuary in the Storm

The revelation sent a wave of nausea through my stomach. Julian hadn't cared about Mia when she was a baby; he had viewed her as an anchor dragging down his corporate ambitions. Now, five years later, he had climbed the ladder at Vanguard, and he was using his power to annihilate my life.
“He knows,” I panicked, taking a step toward the hallway where Mia was sleeping peacefully in one of the guest rooms. “Adrian, if he’s doing this, he knows where I work. He might try to take her. He might try to use custody to blackmail me—”
Adrian caught my wrist gently, pulling me back before panic could overtake me. His grip was firm, warm, and anchored me to reality.
“Listen to me,” Adrian commanded, his voice dark and absolute. “He will not touch her. He will not touch you. I have security guards stationed outside your apartment, outside this building, and outside Mia’s school. Julian Sterling is a coward who operates in shadows. He doesn't know who he’s dealing with.”
“You don't understand how ruthless he is,” I cried, tears finally breaking past my defenses. “He left us with nothing! I built this life out of pure survival, Adrian! If he takes my reputation, if he takes my ability to provide for Mia, I have nothing left!”
“You have me!” Adrian shouted, the emotion tearing through his usual icy composure.
The room went completely still.
Adrian breathed heavily, his chest heaving, his dark eyes burning into mine with an intensity that took my breath away. He stepped closer, closing the distance between us until there was no space left to run.
“You have me, Clara,” he repeated, his voice dropping to a fierce, desperate whisper. “You are not alone anymore. Do you hear me? You don't have to carry the whole world on your shoulders. Let me fight for you.”
I looked into his eyes—the eyes of the coldest billionaire in Manhattan, now filled with an unmistakable, breathtaking devotion.
“Why?” I whispered, my voice trembling. “Why are you doing all of this for us?”
Adrian reached up, his large, warm hand cupping the side of my face, his thumb gently wiping away a fallen tear. “Because five minutes after your daughter walked into my hallway and told me I was too handsome to be alone, I realized she was right. But not because I needed just anyone. Because I needed you.”
He bent his head down and kissed me.
It wasn't a tentative kiss. It was deep, possessive, and filled with years of suppressed longing. I gasped against his lips, my hands instantly rising to wrap around his neck, pulling him closer. The fear, the scandal, the corporate threats—everything melted away beneath the fire of his mouth.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, we were both breathless.
“We fight him together,” Adrian whispered against my skin. “Tomorrow, we turn the tables.”
