Chapter 8 - The Viper in the Suite

Before I could fire back, Adrian reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a slender silver remote control.

He didn't argue. He didn't raise his voice. He simply pressed a button.

Suddenly, the massive digital screens hanging above the ballroom floor—which had been displaying Vanguard’s promotional logos—flickered and cut to black.

The ambient music stopped. The room fell into absolute silence.

“What is the meaning of this?” Julian snapped, turning around in confusion toward the main stage.

The massive screens lit up again. But instead of jewelry advertisements, a high-definition video recording began to play.

It was audio and video from a hidden camera inside a private executive suite at the Carlyle Hotel, recorded just forty-eight hours prior.

On the giant screen, clear as day, was Julian Sterling sitting across from Arthur Blackwell.

“Once we frame Clara Vance with the IP leak,” Julian’s recorded voice echoed loudly through the entire Plaza ballroom, “Adrian Kane’s reputation will take a hit big enough for the board to oust him. Vanguard takes the Bellamy line, Blackwell gets a ten percent cut under the table, and Clara gets blacklisted so she can never ask me for child support.”

The ballroom erupted into chaos.

Gasps of horror, sharp insults, and the frantic clicking of camera shutters filled the air.

Julian’s face went from pale to ghostly white. He backed away, staring at the screen in utter horror. “This... this is illegal! This is a setup!”

“No, Julian,” Adrian said, his voice ringing out over the roaring crowd, cool and triumphant. “It’s a criminal indictment. FBI agents are waiting outside the lobby for you and Arthur Blackwell right now.”

Julian turned to run toward the back exit, but two federal agents in dark suits stepped out from the crowd, intercepting him instantly. Handcuffs clicked loudly into place right in front of every major news outlet in the city.

As Julian was being read his rights, he turned his head, locking eyes with me one last time. His eyes were wide with desperate fury.

I didn't flinch. I stood tall, clutching my daughter’s hand, feeling the solid, unshakable weight of Adrian Kane standing right beside me.
