Chapter 6 - The Velvet Trap

The air in the hallway turned electric. The board members standing behind Arthur began looking at each other in sheer panic.
“You... you’re bluffing!” Arthur stuttered, his composure crumbling.
“I don't bluff, Arthur. You know that,” Adrian said smoothly. “Now, get off my floor before I have security throw you out for corporate espionage.”
Arthur glared at us, his eyes darting to Mia, who was watching him with a wide, innocent gaze. “This isn't over, Kane. You think you’ve won? Vanguard is announcing their launch tonight at the Metropolitan Charity Gala. Julian Sterling will be there. The media will be there. If you try to execute your lawsuit, he will drag this girl’s name through the mud so hard she’ll never work in this town again.”
Arthur spun on his heel and stormed toward the elevators, his legal team scrambling after him.
I released a breath I felt like I had been holding for days. “He’s right about one thing, Adrian. The Gala is tonight. Julian will use the red carpet to publicly claim Vanguard created the designs first. If he spins the narrative before we present the truth, the public will believe him.”
“Then we don't wait for him to spin it,” Adrian said, turning to me, his eyes gleaming with a fierce, brilliant light. “We go to the Gala. Together.”
“As what?” I asked, my heart hammering.
Adrian smiled—a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his entire face. He leaned down and cupped my cheek.
“As the CEO of Blackwell & Reed, and the woman who is about to take everything from him.”

Mia tugged on Adrian’s jacket sleeve. “Can I wear a princess dress?”
Adrian chuckled, dropping down to her height. “Mia, for tonight, you can wear whatever you want. Because tonight, we are going to show the whole city who runs it.”
