Chapter 13 - The Unraveling

Midnight arrived with a howling wind that rattled the sixty-story glass panes of the penthouse like skeleton fingers.
Richard Vance sat on the floor, the pen clutched in his stiff, frost-bitten fingers. The single sheet of paper lay illuminated by the pale moonlight. His mind raced through a frantic, desperate loop of denial. He was Richard Vance. He was a titan of industry. He had dined with presidents and manipulated global markets. He couldn't end up in a prison cell.
Clang.
A heavy, metallic thud echoed from the service hallway.
Richard flinched violently. A second later, the sharp sound of heavy boots marching down the corridor pierced the silence.
"Mr. Vance?" a harsh, metallic voice called out from the darkness. "By order of the municipal housing court and the primary lienholders, this property is being reclaimed. Open the door!"
They were here. The bank foreclosure team. The repo men. The final executioners of his ruined life.
Panic surged through Richard’s veins like liquid fire. If they found him here, broken and penniless, they wouldn't just evict him—they would drag him out into the freezing streets in his tattered clothes for the paparazzi to feast on. Every tabloid in the country would run his face across their front pages as the ultimate fallen king.
His hands shook uncontrollably. He looked down at the confession paper. It meant prison. It meant orange jumpsuits and concrete walls. But it also meant walls. It meant a roof, a bed, and safety from the howling wolves outside.
Richard slammed the pen down onto the paper, his hand carving a jagged, desperate signature across the bottom line.
"I signed it!" Richard screamed toward the door, tears of absolute humiliation streaming down his cheeks. "Just open the door! I signed the damn paper!"
The heavy oak door swung open, but it wasn't the bank agents standing there.
It was Marcus, flanked by two federal marshals, holding a digital scanner. Marcus looked down at the signed paper, checked the signature, and nodded slowly.

"Pleasure doing business with you, Richard," Marcus said coldly, signaling the marshals forward.
Before Richard could scream, cold steel cuffs snapped tightly around his wrists.
