Chapter 4 - Vengeance in the Shadows

"Get the oxygen mask on her now!" Dr. Harrison barked, snapping his medical case open with practiced precision.

The tiny apartment instantly transformed into a sterile triage unit. Oxygen hissed softly as the clear plastic mask was strapped over Elena’s face. Monitors beeped with vital signs, casting a jittery green light across the cracked plaster walls. Arthur stood frozen at the foot of the bed, his broad shoulders trembling as he watched the sister he thought dead fighting for every ragged breath.

"She’s suffering from severe pneumonia and advanced malnutrition," Dr. Harrison announced grimly, shining a penlight into Elena's eyes. "Her immune system is completely shot. If you had waited twelve more hours... well, Mr. Sterling, I won't lie to you. She wouldn't have made it."

Arthur closed his eyes, a wave of dark, suffocating rage washing over him. The luxury restaurants, the high-society galas, the untouchable elites who laughed while a starving child was humiliated on a restaurant floor—all of it felt suddenly sickening.

Elena weakly lifted a pale, trembling hand. Arthur was by her side in a heartbeat, dropping to his knees and grasping her skeletal fingers in his own calloused ones.

"Don't talk," Arthur choked out, his iron composure completely shattered. "Save your strength, El. I’m here. I’m finally here. You and Mia are never going back to this. No one will ever touch you again."

Elena weakly shook her head beneath the oxygen mask, a faint, bitter smile touching her cracked lips. She squeezed his hand with surprising strength, then gestured weakly toward a heavy iron lockbox sitting on a rickety wooden crate in the corner of the room.

Arthur looked at the box, then back at his sister. He stood up, walked over, and easily popped the rusted latch with his thumb.

Inside the box were old family photographs, a few tattered legal documents, and a stack of thick, yellowed envelopes stamped with official corporate seals. Arthur pulled the top document out and unfolded it. As his eyes scanned the bold text, the temperature in the room seemed to drop twenty degrees.

It was a fraudulent land deed transfer from twenty-five years ago. The signature at the bottom belonged to none other than Richard Vance—Eleanor Vance’s billionaire husband, and one of the primary stakeholders in Arthur’s own shipping conglomerate.

Richard hadn't just stood by while the Sterling family estate was liquidated after their parents' deaths; he had orchestrated the forgery that stripped Elena of her entire inheritance, casting her out penniless into the unforgiving streets while he built his empire on stolen blood money.

Arthur slowly lowered the paper. The sadness in his eyes vanished completely, replaced by a cold, calculating, apocalyptic fury. The "Iron Shark" wasn't just going to bite; he was going to consume them whole.

"Marcus," Arthur said softly, his voice carrying a lethal, icy calm.

Marcus materialized by the door. "Yes, Mr. Sterling?"

"Contact our legal team. I want every single asset belonging to Richard and Eleanor Vance frozen by sunrise. Every bank account, every offshore shell company, every piece of real estate, every stock option."

"Sir," Marcus hesitated, adjusting his glasses. "That will trigger a massive market panic. The Vance Corporation holds significant weight on the exchange."

Arthur turned his head slowly, locking his piercing, dead-cold gaze onto his most trusted aide.

"Let it burn to the ground," Arthur whispered. "And make sure Richard knows exactly who struck the match."
