Chapter 7 - The Gathering Storm

The private medical wing of St. Jude’s Hospital was a fortress of quiet efficiency. Sunlight filtered softly through floor-to-ceiling windows, casting warm golden patterns across a room decorated more like a luxury hotel suite than a hospital ward.

On a plush, adjustable bed, Elena Sterling sat propped up against crisp white pillows. The hollow, skeletal look in her face was slowly being replaced by a healthy flush, thanks to round-the-clock IV nutrition and expert medical care. Her vibrant amber eyes shone with a quiet, emotional light as she watched the small figure curled up fast asleep in the armchair beside her.

Mia was fast asleep, wrapped in a blanket thick enough to drown in. Her little face, scrubbed clean of soot and tears, looked peaceful for the first time in her young life. On the low table beside her sat a spread of gourmet pastries, fresh fruit, and a brand-new tablet computer—gifts from an uncle who was desperately trying to make up for a lifetime of absence in forty-eight hours.

The door clicked open softly.

Arthur stepped into the room, holding a steaming cup of black coffee. He walked over to the bed, handing the cup to Elena with a gentle, practiced care.

"She hasn't stopped smiling since the doctors gave her those new clothes," Elena whispered softly, her eyes misty as she looked at her daughter. "Artie... I still feel like I’m dreaming. For ten years, I lived in the dark, dodging creditors, scraping together pennies just to keep us from freezing... and now..."

"You’re home," Arthur interrupted firmly, pulling up a chair and sitting beside her. He reached out, gently squeezing her hand. "You were never supposed to live like that, El. It was my fault. I should have looked harder for you after Mom and Dad died. I let my pride keep me from protecting you."

"We were both stubborn," Elena smiled faintly, a nostalgic warmth in her voice. "You with your empire, me with my independence. But... Richard Vance... Artie, how did you find out what he did?"

Arthur’s expression darkened slightly, the "Iron Shark" surfacing for a brief, lethal moment.

"When I opened your locket and saw the crest inside, everything clicked," Arthur said quietly. "Richard thought he had buried the past when he forged those documents and forced you onto the streets. He thought he was untouchable behind his corporate walls. But he made one fatal mistake."

"What was that?"

"He let his wife walk into Le Grand Marigold." Arthur took a sip of his coffee, his eyes fixing on the skyline outside. "By the time the sun sets today, Richard and Eleanor Vance won't even have a pot to piss in. Every asset they own has been seized under federal RICO statutes. Their social circle has abandoned them, their accounts are frozen, and their mansion is currently being foreclosed by the bank."

Elena stared at her brother, a mixture of shock and deep, cathartic relief washing over her face. The ghosts that had haunted her for decades were finally being laid to rest.

"And what happens to them now?" Elena asked quietly.

"They get to experience what it’s like to have nothing," Arthur replied coldly. "Just like you did."

Before Elena could answer, a sharp, urgent knock echoed at the door.

Marcus stepped into the room, his expression unusually tense. He didn't speak immediately; he simply held out a heavy manila folder toward Arthur.

"Sir, you need to see this. It’s not about the Vances."

Arthur frowned, setting his coffee cup down. "What is it?"

"It’s about the fire at the old family estate twenty-five years ago. The one that forced Elena out." Marcus hesitated, adjusting his glasses. "The official report... it wasn't an accident."
