Chapter 9 - The Final Reckoning

The Vance Global Headquarters was a monument to corporate hubris. Once a gleaming tower of glass and steel that dominated the financial district, it now stood dark, silent, and abandoned. The lobby lights were off, the automated security gates hung open, and the hum of thousands of computers had been replaced by an eerie, hollow silence.
Richard Vance stood alone in the center of his 60th-floor private office. The room was pitch black except for the harsh, flickering blue glow of a laptop screen resting on the bare mahogany desk. His hair was disheveled, his expensive suit wrinkled and stained with sweat. He was frantically downloading encrypted offshore files onto a thumb drive, trying to salvage whatever crumbs of his empire remained hidden from the government.
"Come on... come on, transfer faster," Richard muttered under his breath, his hands shaking so badly he could barely hit the keys.
Click.
The heavy mahogany double doors of the office clicked open.
Richard froze. He slowly turned his head around, his eyes straining against the darkness.
Standing in the doorway, framed by the pale moonlight streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows, was Arthur Sterling. He wasn't carrying a weapon. He didn't need one. The sheer, suffocating aura of lethal intent radiating from him filled the entire room.
"A-Arthur," Richard stammered, scrambling backward until his hips hit the edge of the desk. He forced a pathetic, trembling smile to his face. "Look... let’s be reasonable. It was business! Just ruthless corporate maneuvering! We can make a deal—I have offshore accounts, I can sign over—"
"You didn't just maneuver, Richard," Arthur interrupted, his voice cutting through the silence like a razor blade as he slowly advanced across the room. "Twenty-five years ago, you burned my family to the ground. You murdered my parents. You exiled my sister into a nightmare of starvation and pain."
"I was young! I was ambitious!" Richard screamed, throwing his hands up in defense as Arthur closed the distance. "Everyone does whatever it takes to win!"
"Winning is building an empire," Arthur stopped just two feet away from him, towering over the cowering billionaire. "What you did was pure cowardice. And tonight, the bill comes due."
Before Richard could run, Arthur’s hand shot out like a lightning bolt, grabbing him by the silk tie and slamming him violently against the glass window. The sixty-story drop yawned terrifyingly below them, the city lights looking like a distant field of cold stars.
Richard gasped for air, his fingers clawing desperately at Arthur’s unyielding grip. "You’re going to kill me?! You’ll spend the rest of your life in prison!"
"Prison?" Arthur chuckled, a dark, humorless sound. "Prison is too good for you, Richard. You don't get to die tonight. You get to live."
"What... what are you talking about?"
Arthur pulled a heavy manila folder from his jacket and tossed it onto the desk beside the glowing laptop.
"Everything you own is gone. Every cent, every share, every shell company, every piece of real estate. You are legally bankrupt, criminally indicted, and utterly erased from this world. By sunrise, you won't even have a name recognized by the state."
Richard stared at the folder in absolute horror. "You... you took everything..."
"I took back what was mine," Arthur whispered coldly. He shoved Richard backward, sending the disgraced billionaire crashing hard onto the carpet.
May you like
Arthur turned his back on him, walking toward the elevators without a backward glance.
"Live with the emptiness, Richard," Arthur called out over his shoulder as the elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. "Live with the exact same hunger you forced my sister to endure."
