Chapter 8 - Ashes of the Truth

The room grew instantly cold.

Elena stopped breathing, her hand flying to her mouth as the memories of that horrific night—the choking smoke, the shattering glass, the screams in the dark—came rushing back with terrifying clarity.

"What are you talking about, Marcus?" Arthur demanded, his voice dropping an octave as he snatched the manila folder from his aide's hands. "The fire department concluded it was a faulty electrical panel in the west wing."

"That was the report Richard Vance paid the lead investigator to file," Marcus said grimly, pointing to a freshly unsealed transcript inside the folder. "When our forensic auditors went through the Vance Corporation's old offshore ledgers we seized yesterday, they found a series of wire transfers made the exact week of the fire. The recipient wasn't an electrician. It was an arsonist."

Arthur’s hands trembled as he opened the transcript. The words blurred before his eyes, but the core truth hit him like a physical blow. Richard Vance hadn't just stolen their inheritance after the fact; he had burned the house down with their parents inside to eliminate the primary trustees of the estate, framing the electrical failure and forcing the grieving, fractured siblings apart so they could never mount a defense.

"He killed them," Elena whispered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as her body shook with violent sobs. "Our parents... Richard murdered them?"

"Yes," Arthur said, his voice terrifyingly quiet. The fury in his chest wasn't hot anymore; it was an absolute, blinding white-hot vacuum that threatened to consume everything in its path.

He slowly stood up, smoothing the front of his black suit jacket. The "Iron Shark" was gone. In his place was something far more dangerous: a man with nothing left to lose and an infinite amount of power to exact justice.

"Where is Richard right now?" Arthur asked, his voice barely above a whisper.

"He was released from the precinct holding cells an hour ago on a technicality regarding the initial asset freeze," Marcus replied steadily. "He’s currently at his abandoned corporate headquarters, trying to access his private server room before the federal marshals sweep the building at midnight."

Arthur walked over to the hospital bed, leaning down to press a tender kiss to his sister's forehead.

"Stay here, El. Lock the door. Guard detail is stationed outside," Arthur commanded softly. "I have some unfinished business from twenty-five years ago."

"Artie, no," Elena grabbed his sleeve, panic in her eyes. "Don't lower yourself to his level. Let the law handle him!"

"The law deals in years and cells," Arthur replied, his eyes flashing with cold, unyielding resolve. "I deal in absolute reckoning."
