Chapter 17 - Shadows in the Mirror

Ten thousand miles away, in a dimly lit, damp basement safehouse tucked away in the industrial outskirts of Zurich, a single glowing computer monitor cast an eerie green light across a scarred wooden desk.

A man sat hunched over the terminal, his face obscured by the heavy hood of a black sweatshirt. His fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard with frantic, rhythmic speed, executing a series of deep-net decryption scripts.

On the screen, a secured corporate database flickered to life.

It was the secondary, hidden ledger of the Vance Global Trust—an off-the-books subsidiary that Richard Vance had sworn didn't exist, containing millions of dollars in untraceable bearer bonds and offshore cryptocurrency wallets.

The encryption barrier flashed red, then yellow, and finally turned a brilliant, triumphant green.

Access Granted.

A low, guttural laugh echoed in the empty basement. It wasn't Richard Vance. It was someone younger, sharper, and far more ruthless—someone who had been watching the Sterling-Vance war from the absolute shadows, waiting for both giants to exhaust themselves.

"Stupid, arrogant old men," a harsh voice muttered in the dark. "They thought Richard was the only player in the game."

The hooded figure clicked a single button on the screen, initiating an automatic, multi-layered wire transfer that routed millions of dollars out of the frozen trust and straight into an anonymous, untraceable shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands.

The screen blinked: Transfer Complete.

The figure leaned back in the creaking chair, pulling down the hood to reveal a sharp, calculating smirk and a pair of cold, predatory eyes that bore an unsettling resemblance to Richard Vance’s old corporate profile—only sharper, deadlier, and completely untethered by family ties.

Victor Vance. Richard’s estranged, brilliant, and completely sociopathic nephew, who had been operating out of Europe for the past decade, watching his uncle’s empire fall with quiet amusement.

"Enjoy your victory, Uncle Arthur," Victor whispered to the empty room, his smile widening into a razor-thin line. "You took his money. But you left the real weapon behind."

He reached down, picking up a heavy, steel-encased flash drive resting on the desk—a drive containing the master encryption keys to every single logistics hub, shipping route, and international port controlled by the Sterling Empire.

"Let's see how well your little girl sleeps when the ships stop moving," Victor hissed, standing up and plunging the basement into absolute darkness.
