Chapter 18 - The Ghost Ship

The Pacific maritime shipping lane off the coast of Seattle was one of the busiest commercial arteries in the world. Colossal container vessels, carrying billions of dollars in cargo, moved in precise, automated formations guided by state-of-the-art satellite telemetry and AI-driven logistics software.
At 3:14 AM inside the Sterling Logistics Command Center, the wall-mounted master tracking grid suddenly flashed a violent, blinking red.
"Sir! We have a critical anomaly!" a frantic systems operator yelled, standing up from his console and knocking his coffee cup to the floor.
Marcus, who was supervising the night shift, strode rapidly across the sleek, dark-paneled command floor, his wire-rimmed glasses catching the harsh red glare of the screens.
"Report," Marcus demanded sharply.
"The entire automated navigation grid for Sector 4 just went dark," the operator stammered, his fingers flying across his keyboard. "Twelve mega-freighters carrying multi-million-dollar import supplies have lost satellite sync. Their onboard steering systems have been hijacked by an external override protocol!"
Marcus’s blood ran cold. The Sterling logistics network was protected by military-grade encryption. For an external override to succeed, someone would need the master cryptographic seed—a digital key that only existed on a physical, air-gapped flash drive stored in Arthur Sterling’s private vault.
"Is the vault compromised?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping an octave into lethal seriousness.
"Negative, sir. The physical vault is secure," the operator replied, sweat beading on his forehead. "But... the override code isn't coming from outside. It’s routing through an internal proxy tied to an old Vance Global subsidiary protocol."
Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled out his secure satellite phone and dialed Arthur’s private residence directly.
It rang twice before a deep, sleep-rough voice answered.
"Marcus. It's three in the morning. This better be good."
"Mr. Sterling, we have a catastrophic breach," Marcus reported rapidly, skipping all pleasantries. "Someone has hijacked our entire Pacific shipping fleet using an old Vance subsidiary backdoor. Twelve mega-freighters are currently drifting off course toward international rocky shoals."
On the other end of the line, the heavy silence was absolute. When Arthur spoke next, every trace of sleep was gone, replaced by the razor-sharp focus of the Iron Shark waking from a deep slumber.

"Trace the ping," Arthur commanded, his voice cold enough to shatter glass. "Find out who’s holding the keys."
"We're trying, sir, but the signal is bouncing through a dozen offshore proxies in Zurich," Marcus replied grimly. "Whoever is behind this... they aren't just trying to hurt the company. They’re coming for the family."
