Chapter 13 - The Betrayal Within the Betrayal Dante didn't draw his weapon. He walked slowly across the polished linoleum floor, his boots clicking rhythmically, stopping three feet from the desk where Marco sat. His face was an unreadable mask of absolute, terrifying calm.

"You told me you turned her away at the gates nine years ago," Dante said, his voice dangerously low. "You told me you gave her five thousand dollars and sent her into the Chicago night."
"I lied," Marco said simply, leaning back in his chair and lacing his fingers together over his stomach. "I didn't turn her away at the gates. I brought her here. This facility wasn't built by the Vance family, Dante. It was built by me, using siphon funds from the Vatello syndicate over fifteen years, with the full knowledge that a king with an heir is a king who can be controlled."
Dante's jaw tightened. "You manipulated the medical records. The infertility diagnosis—it was fabricated."
"Not fabricated," Marco corrected, a sharp gleam in his eyes. "Enhanced. You had a rare genetic marker—something present from birth that made you uniquely susceptible to a localized hormonal suppression therapy administered through your private physicians without your knowledge. I paid the doctors off. I orchestrated the relationships with Adriana and Sophia. I made sure every woman you ever touched came away empty-handed."
"Why?" Dante asked. The single word carried the weight of a collapsing mountain. "Why destroy my bloodline while pretending to protect it?"
"Because a king who has everything is a tyrant who cannot be managed," Marco spat, his calm exterior finally cracking as bitterness surged to the surface. "I built this empire beside your father. I bled for every inch of concrete from the North Side docks to the Indiana border. And what was my reward? I was a glorified accountant carrying your bags while you played warlord. I wanted a dynasty of my own creation. I wanted to be the hand that held the puppet strings of the entire Midwest."
"And Elena?" Dante’s voice dropped to a lethal whisper. "Where does she fit into your grand architecture?"
"Elena was a variable I didn't calculate," Marco admitted, his gaze dropping to the desk. "She discovered what we were doing. She realized her child wasn't just a pawn—he was living proof of your biological capability. She tried to run. I ordered her isolated, but she slipped through my guards nine years ago and made it to your front gates before my men could intercept her fully. I thought I handled it. I thought the boy would die in the slums."
"And instead," Dante said, stepping closer until the barrel of his hidden sidearm pressed firmly against the edge of the desk, "he walked right through my front doors."

"Yes," Marco laughed softly, blood welling at the corner of his mouth. "Irony is a cruel mistress, boss. The boy has your face, your mind, and your ruthless instincts. And now? He's sitting in your estate, studying your ledgers, learning how to destroy what's left of you from the inside out."
Before Marco could finish his sentence, the computer monitors behind him flashed bright red, displaying a high-priority system alert: EXTERNAL BREACH DETECTED. MAIN VAULT COMPROMISED.
