Chapter 2 - The Council of Nine The boardroom of the Vatello compound smelled of old leather, expensive cigars, and the metallic tang of impending betrayal. Nine men—the regional dons who controlled the docks, the unions, the financial laundering networks, and the logistics lines across the Midwest—sat around the massive black granite table. They didn't stand when Dante entered. That was the first transgression.

At the head of the table sat Viktor Vance, an old-guard viper who had watched Dante’s father build the empire and believed himself overdue for the crown.

"Dante," Viktor rasped, his voice like grinding stones. "We hear rumors the North Side expansion is bleeding capital. We hear the medical reports from your private doctors finally leaked out to the commission. A throne without an heir is just an invitation for a civil war."

Dante pulled out his chair at the far end of the table, remaining standing. He rested his knuckles on the cold granite, leaning forward slightly. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't need to.

"The North Side is solvent, Viktor," Dante said softly. "And my medical reports are my own affair. If any man at this table believes my seat is vacant, he is welcome to stand up right now and try to take it."

Silence slammed down on the room like a steel shutter. None of the nine kings moved a muscle. They knew the lethality wrapped inside Dante’s charcoal suit. Viktor’s face tightened into an ugly, yellow-toothed grin, about to retort, when the heavy sound-proof mahogany doors of the boardroom abruptly swung open.

The guards stationed outside didn't block the doorway. They couldn't. Because standing on the threshold, soaked to the bone from the freezing Chicago sleet, wearing a tattered oversized jacket and carrying a stolen loaf of bread under his arm, was the eight-year-old boy from the street market.

His dark, bottomless eyes swept past Viktor Vance, past the terrified regional captains, and locked directly onto Dante Vatello.

The boy didn't tremble. He stepped across the threshold, his dirty sneakers squeaking against the polished marble floor, and spoke the four words that cracked the Vatello empire straight to its foundation:

"You're my father."
