Chapter 38 - Shadows of the Past Later that evening, after the dignitaries had departed and the grand hall had fallen into a peaceful, amber-lit silence, Dante walked out onto the second-floor balcony overlooking the sprawling, secure gardens of the estate.

Elena stood near the stone balustrade, watching the snow-free spring breeze rustle through the old oak trees.

"You're leaving," Dante stated softly, walking up beside her, leaning his forearms against the cold stone.

"There's nothing left for me here, Dante," Elena said without turning her head, her voice calm, carrying a quiet sense of closure. "I was a variable in a war I didn't start. My part in this story ended the day I walked through those iron gates and gave Leo back to his true home."

Dante didn't try to stop her. He understood the architecture of survival better than anyone. "The private estate in Geneva is secured under a neutral name. You'll never have to look over your shoulder again."

Elena finally turned to look at him, a faint, genuine smile touching her lips. "Take care of him, Dante. He’s more than just an heir. He’s the future."

"I know," Dante replied softly. "He's a Vatello."
