Chapter 21 - The Cipher in the Snow

The winter wind howled against the reinforced glass of the Vatello study, carrying a biting Chicago frost that tried in vain to breach the inner sanctum. Dante Vatello stood motionless before the heavy oak desk, his gaze locked onto the manila envelope resting on the polished surface. Inside was the photograph of the mysterious woman standing outside the estate gates—a woman whose dark, depthless eyes mirrored the exact genetic signature that had nearly torn his syndicate apart.
At ten years old, Leo Vatello did not flinch when his father slid the photograph across the mahogany. The boy’s fingers, steady and cold, traced the outline of the woman's coat in the picture.
"She wasn't at the North Shore clinic, was she?" Leo asked, his voice dropping into that unnervingly calm register that commanded rooms full of grown capos.
"No," Dante replied, his jaw tightening as old memories fractured under new weight. "Marco’s ledgers in the Indiana facility were incomplete. He hid a second file—one detailing a secondary surrogate protocol funded by a rival faction before the diagnostic clinic was even built."
The intercom on the desk chimed. Nico’s voice crackled through the static, urgent and laced with tension.

"Boss. We have movement on the eastern access road. A single vehicle dropped someone off near the perimeter fence and vanished into the storm. Security cameras picked up the face. It’s not a mercenary. It’s someone from your past."
Dante didn't hesitate. He pulled his Sig Sauer from his shoulder holster, checking the chamber with a practiced click. "Lock down the perimeter. Let no one in or out until I verify who walked through our gates."
