Chapter 19 - The New Reign By the following year, the Vatello empire was no longer just a regional syndicate; it was a global financial and logistical powerhouse that controlled trade routes stretching from the ports of New York to the shipping lanes of the Pacific.

Leo Vatello, now nine years old, sat in the massive leather chair behind the oak desk in the estate study—the exact same chair his father had ruled from for decades. He wasn't playing games or reading comic books; he was reviewing international shipping manifests, cross-referencing Swiss bank transfers, and signing off on regional security deployments with the cold, calculated efficiency of a veteran don.
The door opened softly, and Dante stepped into the room, holding two cups of black coffee. He set one down on the edge of the desk beside a stack of audited ledgers.
"You've been in that chair for four hours straight," Dante said, a faint hint of amusement in his deep voice. "Even kings need to sleep, Leo."
Leo looked up from the monitor, taking a sip of the coffee (mostly milk, just the way he liked it) and meeting his father's gaze with those identical, depthless eyes.
"A king doesn't sleep when the markets in Tokyo are opening, Father," Leo replied deadpan, echoing Dante’s own words from three years prior.
Dante chuckled—a rare, genuine sound that warmed the cold oak walls of the study. He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling, secure grounds of the estate where the snow was beginning to fall once more, blanketing the Chicago streets in white.

"You know," Dante murmured, watching the snowflakes drift past the reinforced glass, "when I first saw you kicking that hundred-dollar bill into the gutter, I thought you were just another stray."
"And instead," Leo said quietly, turning back to his terminal, "I was the best investment you ever made."
