Chapter 9 - Ashes of the Crown By dawn, the snow had stopped falling, leaving Chicago buried under a pristine, blinding blanket of white. Inside the Vatello estate, the smoke from the breached windows had cleared, replaced by the heavy silence of absolute dominion.

The regional captains who had sided with Viktor Vance knelt in the main courtyard, their hands bound behind their backs, surrounded by armed loyalists. Dante stood on the grand stone steps of the front entrance, his charcoal coat unbuttoned against the morning chill. He looked down at the men who had dared to challenge his throne.
"You wanted an heir," Dante said aloud, his voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard. "You wanted a weakness to exploit. Instead, you found the anchor that keeps this house standing."
Behind him, the heavy oak doors opened. Leo stepped out onto the porch, wrapped in a warm wool coat bearing the Vatello crest, his chin tilted up with that same fearless, depthless gaze that had stopped Dante in the middle of a Chicago street market just twenty-four hours ago.

Dante didn't look back at the kneeling captains. He reached down, placing a heavy, calloused hand on the boy’s small shoulder.
"Take them away," Dante commanded his men. "And let the rest of the underworld know: the Vatello line doesn't end. It just got started."
