Chapter 1 - The Confession on the StepsThe iron gates of the estate clicked shut with a heavy, final sound that seemed to echo through the cold evening air. Renley Hart stood frozen on the marble steps, her fingers still tingling from where the heavy paper bag had rested just moments before. The silence that followed the mafia boss's question was deafening. None of the guards moved. They looked less like hardened enforcers and more like statues carved from dread.

The man on the steps—the one newspapers whispered about in dark corners and police files labeled untouchable—clutched the faded paper bag to his chest as if it were a fragile piece of glass. His knuckles were stark white against the dark fabric of his shirt.
“Walter Pike is dead,” the boss repeated, the words tasting like ash on his tongue. He looked up, his dark eyes piercing right through Renley’s cheap winter coat. “How? When?”
“Three days ago,” Renley whispered, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to stay brave. “A neighbor helped me open his door. He was sitting by the window. He looked like he was just sleeping, but he wasn’t breathing anymore.”
The man closed his eyes, a sharp intake of breath his only visible reaction. But the guard to his left flinched, whispering a curse under his breath that made the boss raise a single, warning hand.
“You brought him soup every Thursday,” the boss said, his voice dropping to a gravelly register that commanded absolute obedience. “Even when the weather turned bad. Even when you were late.”
“He was alone,” Renley said simply, tears prickling at the corners of her eyes. “Old people shouldn't have to eat cold meals in empty rooms.”

The boss stared at her for a long, agonizing moment. Then, he stood up slowly, the trembling in his hands subsiding into a cold, controlled fury. He turned to his head guard, a scarred giant named Viktor.
“Bring her inside,” the boss ordered, his voice chillingly calm. “And get the ledger from the wall safe. Everything changes tonight.”
