Chapter 18 - Breach at MidnightThe concussive blast of the northern gate explosion shook the entire mansion down to its foundations. Dust rained from the vaulted ceilings, and emergency alarms shrieked a deafening warning throughout the halls.

“Renley!” Alistair roared, sprinting out of the study and down the corridor toward the guest suite where the young girl had been resting.
He threw open the door. The room was empty. The window was wide open, letting the cold night air sweep across an unmade bed. On the bedside table sat the empty paper soup bag, weighted down by a single silver bullet.
Alistair’s blood ran completely cold. A dark, terrifying rage—one he hadn't felt in thirty years—surged through his veins, burning away every trace of mercy he had left.
“Vance!”
A voice echoed from the grand foyer below. Alistair drew his sidearm, spun around, and stepped out onto the second-floor balcony that overlooked the marble entrance hall.

Standing in the center of the foyer, surrounded by a dozen masked operatives holding tactical weapons, was a tall, imposing figure wearing a dark trench coat. Holding Renley gently by the arm, with a cold blade pressed lightly against her neck, was a man Alistair thought he had buried a lifetime ago: Lucas Kane, his former second-in-command who had betrayed him decades ago.
“Hello, Alistair,” Kane called out, smiling wickedly as Renley tried bravely not to cry. “Did you really think you could bury the past just by opening a soup kitchen?”
