Chapter 3 - The Target on Her BackThe heavy oak doors clicked shut behind Viktor as he rushed out to secure the perimeter, leaving Alistair and Renley alone in the vast, shadowed study. The air felt thick, charged with an invisible static that made the hairs on Renley’s arms stand up.

“You cannot go back to that community kitchen, Renley,” Alistair said, pacing slowly toward the floor-to-ceiling windows that overlooked the iron gates. Outside, the headlights of three black SUVs cut through the gathering gloom, their engines idling in a synchronized, low-frequency hum.
“I have to,” Renley protested, clutching the straps of her backpack. “The kids, the elderly—they rely on those meals. If I don't show up, Mrs. Gable will worry sick, and—and who’s going to deliver to the south block?”
Alistair stopped pacing. He turned around, his expression severe. “Listen to me carefully. The people who killed Walter didn't just want him silenced. They are watching every connection he had in his final months. You brought food to his apartment every Thursday like clockwork. To the Syndicate, that doesn't make you an innocent kid—it makes you a loose end.”
Renley felt a cold shiver crawl down her spine. “A loose end?”
“They know you were there,” Alistair said quietly, walking back over and kneeling down so he was at eye level with her. “They might even know you found him. If you walk back out those gates right now, you won't make it two blocks before they try to silence you to cover their tracks.”
Before Renley could digest the terrifying reality of his words, a sharp, piercing sound ripped through the quiet mansion.
Clang. Clang. Clang.
It was the security alarm from the front gate.
Alistair’s eyes locked onto the security monitor built into the corner of the desk. On the screen, the grainy feed showed two figures in dark tactical gear cutting through the perimeter fence with heavy hydraulic shears, moving with terrifying speed toward the front entrance.
“They’re already here,” Alistair whispered.
Renley’s breath hitched. “Who?”
“The cleanup crew,” Alistair replied, his voice hardening into steel. He stood up, grabbed a heavy brass fireplace poker, and then stopped, tossing it aside for something much heavier from a concealed wall panel. When he turned back around, he was holding a sleek, suppressed tactical pistol, checking the magazine with practiced, deadly efficiency.
“Viktor!” Alistair shouted into his collar radio. “Code Red. Alpha team at the north gate. Do not let them reach the main foyer.”
“Understood, Boss,” Viktor’s voice crackled back through static. “They brought heavy ordnance. It’s an ambush.”
Alistair looked down at Renley, who was trembling violently in the leather armchair. He didn't see a helpless twelve-year-old anymore; he saw Walter’s legacy—the last remaining piece of innocence he had left in a brutal world.

“Stay under this desk, Renley,” Alistair commanded, his tone leaving zero room for argument. “No matter what you hear, no matter who opens this door, do not make a sound.”
As Alistair sprinted out of the study and slammed the heavy oak door, the glass of the grand foyer window exploded inward with a deafening crash. The war for Walter Pike’s secret had officially begun, and Renley was right in the middle of the crossfire.
