Chapter 20 - The Warmth That Conquers AllAlistair stopped halfway down the staircase. He looked at the flash drive in his hand, then down at Renley, who was staring back at him with absolute trust.

“You know, Lucas,” Alistair said softly, his voice echoing through the silent hall, “you spent your whole life stealing gold, counting accounts, and killing people for power. But you never understood what Walter tried to teach us on our very first day.”

Kane frowned, his grip tightening on the knife. “What are you talking about? Drop the drive!”

“Warmth,” Alistair whispered, a fierce, confident smile spreading across his face. “A simple act of kindness can warm an empty room, and a true legacy can never be stolen by cowards.”

Before Kane could react, Alistair didn't drop the drive—he tossed it directly into the air toward the chandelier above them, and at the exact same instant, the double doors of the foyer burst open.

BANG! FLASH!

A blinding stun grenade sailed through the doorway, followed by Viktor and a heavily armed federal tactical unit sweeping the room in synchronized perfection.

Chaos erupted. Flashbangs detonated with deafening roars, filling the room with blinding white light and disorienting smoke. Kane screamed in panic as his grip on Renley slipped.

Renley didn't hesitate. She ducked under Kane’s arm, scrambled across the marble floor, and ran straight toward the bottom of the staircase where Alistair scooped her up into his arms, shielding her safely behind his broad shoulders.

Within thirty seconds, every single operative was disarmed, handcuffed, and pinned to the floor. Viktor stood over a dazed and defeated Lucas Kane, clicking heavy steel cuffs around his wrists with a satisfied grin.

The smoke slowly cleared, drifting up toward the grand chandelier where the flash drive hung safely caught in the decorative ironwork.

Alistair set Renley down gently, checking her over to make sure she was unharmed. She looked up at him, her eyes bright and unafraid.

“Are we still going to deliver soup on Thursday?” Renley asked with a small, hopeful smile.

Alistair wrapped an arm around her shoulders, looking toward the framed photograph of Walter Pike hanging proudly by the entrance, and smiled warmly.

“Every single Thursday, kid,” Alistair promised as the morning sun finally broke through the stained-glass windows, bathing the grand hall in a golden, unbreakable light.
