Chapter 13 - The Siege of the EstateThe sound of blaring sirens tore through the quiet morning air, multiplying until they sounded like a pack of wolves closing in on their prey. Within minutes, a dozen black-and-white cruiser cars and heavily armored tactical transport vehicles swarmed the iron gates of Alistair’s estate, their emergency strobes painting the mansion’s white pillars in harsh flashes of red and blue.

Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the study, Renley watched the flashing lights, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“They’re here,” Renley whispered, clutching the empty paper bag to her chest like a shield.

“Let them come,” Alistair said, his voice an unshakeable anchor. He turned to Viktor. “Is the data transfer to the federal prosecutor’s secure server complete?”

“Ninety-nine percent,” Viktor replied, his fingers flying across the keys. “Three... two... one. Done. The entire Syndicate file is now sitting in the hands of the Department of Justice’s internal corruption unit, completely un-deletable.”

A loud, booming voice echoed through the front courtyard via a megaphone: “Alistair Vance! This is the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Surrender the property immediately and come out with your hands where we can see them!”

Alistair buttoned the top of his dark shirt, straightened his cuffs, and looked down at Renley.

“Stay right here behind the reinforced desk, kid,” Alistair instructed gently. “When they walk through that door, they aren't going to find a criminal empire. They’re going to find a reckoning.”

With that, Alistair walked out of the study and headed down the grand staircase toward the heavy oak front doors, leaving them unlocked.

As the heavy wooden panels swung open, revealing a wall of tactical gear, riot shields, and drawn federal weapons, Alistair raised his empty hands slowly into the air, a cool, enigmatic smile playing on his lips.

“Good morning, agents,” Alistair said calmly. “You took your sweet time. I’ve been waiting for you to clean up this city for years.”
