Chapter 8 - Awakening in the DarkWhen Renley opened her eyes, the harsh fluorescent lights of the underground vault were gone. Instead, she was surrounded by deep, velvety shadows, illuminated only by the faint, pulsing red glow of an emergency backup generator somewhere down the hall.

Her head pounded with a dull, persistent ache, and the taste of sweet chemicals still lingered on the back of her tongue.
“Renley? Kid, can you hear me?”
A rough, familiar voice whispered from the darkness beside her. Renley groaned, rubbing her eyes, and turned her head. Viktor was kneeling next to her, his face pale and smeared with dried blood, but his eyes were sharp and alert.
“Viktor?” Renley whispered, her voice cracking. “Where... where are we? Are we dead?”
“Not yet,” Viktor grunted quietly, helping her sit up against the base of a metal shelving unit. “The air filtration system kicked into emergency purge mode just before we completely passed out. We’re still in the vault.”
Renley’s eyes darted around the room. The massive steel door of the vault was cracked open—just an inch, letting a thin sliver of light cut across the concrete floor.
“Who opened the door?” Renley asked, her heart skipping a beat.
“I don't know,” Viktor replied, his hand resting reassuringly on the grip of his sidearm. “When I woke up ten minutes ago, the electronic lock had been bypassed from the outside. But... the power is completely dead everywhere else in the mansion.”
Renley shivered in the damp, freezing air of the underground room. “Where is Mr. Vance?”
Before Viktor could answer, a slow, heavy pair of footsteps echoed from the hallway just outside the vault door.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
It wasn't the heavy, hurried stomp of combat boots. It was the deliberate, rhythmic tapping of a wooden cane against the polished stone floor.
Viktor instantly raised his pistol, aiming squarely at the crack in the steel door, his muscles tensing like a coiled spring.
“Who’s out there?” Viktor demanded, his voice echoing menacingly through the vault. “Show yourself!”
The footsteps stopped right outside the door. A gloved hand pushed the heavy steel barrier open, and the door swung wide with a slow, eerie creak.
Standing in the doorway was a tall, silver-haired man wearing an elegant trench coat. He leaned lightly on an ebony cane with a polished silver wolf-head handle. He didn't look like an assassin or a Syndicate thug; he looked like an aristocrat from another century.

And as the emergency red light hit his face, Viktor lowered his gun in absolute, paralyzing disbelief.
“No,” Viktor whispered, the color draining entirely from his face. “That’s impossible... You died twenty years ago.”
