Chapter 10 - The Warmth That Never DiesThe live video feed flickered on the monitor, showing the quaint, weathered sign of the community kitchen swinging gently in the evening wind. Below it, masked figures were uncoiling heavy rubber hoses connected to industrial fuel drums, preparing to douse the building in gasoline.

Renley felt the blood drain from her face. Tears welled in her eyes, hot and fast.

“No,” she choked out, her voice trembling with a mix of terror and fierce anger. “Don't touch it. That’s... that’s where they go. They have nowhere else to go!”

General Cruz turned away from the screen, looking down at her with a detached, clinical curiosity. “Sentimentality, Renley, is a fatal flaw. Walter had it, Alistair caught it from him, and now you’re infected with it. Give me the cipher key to the physical archives in the back of this vault, and I’ll call off the burn crew. Refuse, and watch your life’s work turn to ash in five seconds.”

Viktor clenched his fists so hard his knuckles popped, glaring at Cruz with unbridled fury. “You're a monster, Cruz. Walter spent his whole life trying to keep you from destroying what little humanity was left in this city.”

“And he failed,” Cruz replied coldly, raising his hand to press a button on his encrypted communicator to give the final order to burn the kitchen.

Before Cruz’s finger could hit the transmitter, a loud, metallic CLANG echoed from the vault ceiling.

Everyone froze.

Before Cruz could react, a heavy section of the ceiling vent broke away, and a dark shadow dropped silently onto the concrete floor behind him.

It was Alistair Vance.

His face was bruised, and his shirt was torn, but his eyes burned with the absolute fury of a cornered beast. Before Cruz could turn around, Alistair slammed the heavy ebony cane out of his hand, sweeping Cruz’s legs out from under him and pinning him hard against the concrete floor with a heavy boot pressed squarely against his chest.

“You talk too much, Cruz,” Alistair snarled, pressing the barrel of a recovered tactical pistol right between Cruz’s eyes.

Outside on the monitor, the masked men suddenly dropped their fuel hoses, their communicators screeching with automated lockdown alerts as Alistair’s backup forces swarmed the community kitchen from every alleyway, neutralizing the threat in seconds.

Cruz stared up into the barrel of the gun, his aristocratic composure cracking for the first time. “You... you broke out of the study.”

“Walter taught me how to escape much worse than a locked door,” Alistair said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal whisper. He didn't pull the trigger. Instead, he reached down, snatched the flash drive from the terminal port, and tossed it to Viktor.

Alistair then looked down at Renley, who was wiping away her tears, standing tall and brave despite everything she had been through.

Alistair knelt down, the terrifying mafia boss melting away to reveal the broken, grateful man underneath. He gently placed his hand on Renley’s shoulder.

“The kitchen is safe, Renley,” Alistair said softly, a genuine smile breaking across his face. “And so is your secret. Walter would have been proud of you.”

Renley looked from Alistair to the screen, where the community kitchen stood unharmed under the glow of the streetlights. She wiped her cheek and offered a small, brave smile back.

“Does this mean... I still have to deliver soup on Thursday?” Renley asked quietly.

Alistair threw his head back and laughed—a rich, booming sound that completely banished the shadows from the vault.

“Every single Thursday, kid,” Alistair promised, standing up and pulling her into a protective, steady embrace. “And this time, I’m coming with you.”
