Chapter 5 - The Secret CompartmentViktor dropped to one knee beside the desk, wincing as a fresh wave of pain radiated from his wounded shoulder. He grabbed Renley’s arm—firmly, but gently enough not to hurt her—and pulled her out from her hiding spot.

“Can you run?” Viktor asked, his eyes darting toward the reinforced door as a fresh burst of automatic fire chewed through the wood, sending deadly splinters raining down.
“Yes,” Renley whispered, her voice barely audible over the roar of the assault outside. “Where are we going?”
“The panic room,” Viktor said, pressing a concealed brass toggle hidden behind the carved molding of the grand fireplace. With a low, mechanical hiss, a section of the oak wall paneling slid smoothly inward, revealing a narrow, dimly lit concrete stairwell leading down into the darkness. “Move, move, move!”
As they ducked into the hidden passage, a heavy metal thud echoed through the study—the intruders had finally breached the main door using a tactical breaching charge.
“Vance is gone!” a gruff voice roared from inside the study. “Search the room! Find the girl and the ledger! The boss wants them both eliminated before sunrise!”
Viktor pulled Renley deep into the stairwell and slammed the manual override button. The heavy concrete panel slid shut just as a hail of bullets pinged harmlessly against its outer steel casing. Pitch darkness enveloped them for a split second before emergency LED strips flickered to life along the base of the descending stairs.
“Are you okay?” Renley asked, staring wide-eyed at the dark stain spreading across Viktor’s tactical vest.
“I’ve had worse, kid,” Viktor grunted, pulling a heavy-duty walkie-talkie from his belt with his good hand. “Boss, this is Viktor. We’re compromised in the west wing. I’ve secured the package in the vault stairwell.”
A crackle of static preceded Alistair’s voice, cold and razor-sharp. “Hold your position, Viktor. I’m drawing them toward the courtyard. Do not open that vault for anyone—even me—unless I give you the specific passphrase Walter taught us.”
Viktor’s eyes widened slightly. “Understood, Boss. Be careful out there.”
Renley’s head spun. A passphrase? Walter taught a dangerous mafia boss a secret phrase? Every piece of information she was learning tonight completely shattered her understanding of the quiet, gentle old man who used to eat soup by his apartment window.
“Who was he, really?” Renley asked softly as they reached the bottom of the stairs, standing before a massive circular steel vault door that looked like it belonged to a federal reserve bank.

Viktor looked down at the young girl, a complex mixture of exhaustion and profound respect crossing his scarred features.
“Walter Pike,” Viktor said slowly, punching a complex numerical sequence into the digital keypad, “wasn't just a retired old man. Thirty years ago, he was the head of the city’s intelligence network—and the only man who ever had the power to destroy Alistair Vance, but chose to save him instead.”
