CHAPTER 1 — THE BET THAT WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE WON

Nobody in the eastern valley dared to challenge Don Alejandro Garza.

Children stopped talking when his black SUVs rolled through town.

Shop owners lowered their eyes whenever he walked past.

Even the local sheriff avoided saying his name out loud.

Alejandro wasn't simply rich.

He owned thousands of acres.

He owned businesses.

He owned judges.

Some whispered that he even owned the cemetery.

If someone crossed him...

They didn't usually get a second chance.

So when he imported a legendary black stallion from Spain for more than $200,000, everyone assumed it would become another symbol of his power.

The horse arrived chained inside a reinforced trailer.

Its eyes burned with rage.

Its muscles rippled beneath midnight-black skin.

The stable workers refused to unload it.

The moment the doors opened...

The stallion exploded forward like a tornado.

It smashed through wooden fences.

Kicked one ranch hand unconscious.

Sent another flying into a water trough.

Within minutes...

Everyone had a new name for it.

El Diablo.

The Devil.

Alejandro loved it.

He smiled every time another experienced rider was thrown into the dirt.

To him...

Fear meant respect.

But after several weeks...

The joke stopped being funny.

Professional trainers from Texas.

Mexican rodeo champions.

Former military horse handlers.

None lasted longer than a few seconds.

One man left with a shattered spine.

Another never walked again.

One disappeared after secretly suggesting the horse should simply be put down.

Nobody mentioned him afterward.

Then Alejandro made his announcement.

He stood on the balcony of his ranch while hundreds gathered below.

His voice echoed across the valley.

"Fifty thousand dollars."

The crowd instantly fell silent.

"To anyone who rides El Diablo until I say stop."

Gasps spread everywhere.

Fifty thousand dollars.

Enough to buy a house.

Enough to erase years of debt.

Enough to save entire families.

But everyone knew...

The reward wasn't really money.

It was bait.

Nobody expected anyone to survive.

Still...

Desperate people always appeared.

The first volunteer was a famous rodeo champion.

El Diablo threw him into a steel fence before his boots even settled.

The second lasted four seconds.

The third never regained consciousness.

Blood stained the dirt.

Alejandro only laughed.

"NEXT!"

Hours passed.

No one moved.

The prize remained untouched.

Then...

A quiet female voice came from the back of the crowd.

"I'll do it."

Heads turned.

Standing between old farmers was a young woman wearing faded jeans, worn boots, and a simple white shirt.

She looked impossibly small.

Her dark hair was tied into a loose braid.

No expensive gear.

No helmet.

No fear.

Only calm eyes.

The laughter started immediately.

"You?"

"You'll die before touching the saddle!"

"She's insane!"

Even Alejandro leaned back in his chair with amusement.

"What is your name?"

"Elena."

"And why do you think you're different?"

She looked directly into his eyes.

"My father is dying."

The laughter slowly faded.

"My family sold everything."

"Our farm."

"Our truck."

"My mother's jewelry."

"We're still fifty thousand dollars short of his surgery."

She paused.

"So today..."

"I'm not riding for money."

"I'm riding for my father's life."

For one brief second...

Even the crowd felt uncomfortable.

Then Alejandro smiled again.

"A touching story."

He snapped his fingers.

"Open the gate."

The massive iron enclosure groaned open.

Inside...

El Diablo stood perfectly still.

Watching Elena.

Watching everyone.

The air suddenly felt colder.

Nobody noticed something strange.

The horse wasn't looking at the crowd anymore.

It was staring only...

At the silver necklace around Elena's neck.

And then...

The impossible happened.

Instead of charging...

May you like

The monster slowly lowered its head.

The entire ranch fell completely silent.
