CHAPTER 2 — THE HORSE RECOGNIZED HER... AND THE MAFIA BOSS TURNED PALE

Nobody breathed.
Even the wind seemed to disappear.
El Diablo...
The horse that had broken bones without hesitation...
Took one careful step toward Elena.
Then another.
Its ears relaxed.
Its breathing slowed.
It gently pressed its forehead against her shoulder.
The crowd erupted into confused whispers.
"No..."
"That's impossible..."
Alejandro stood up.
His smile vanished.
For the first time in years...
People saw uncertainty on his face.
Elena slowly reached into her pocket.
Without saying a word...
She pulled out a small piece of dried apple.
The stallion accepted it as gently as a family pet.
Then she softly whispered something no one else could hear.
Tears suddenly filled the horse's eyes.
Several ranch workers stared in disbelief.
One elderly stable hand suddenly dropped the bucket he was carrying.
His face turned completely white.
"I've seen this before..."
Someone grabbed his arm.
"What do you mean?"
The old man swallowed hard.
"Ten years ago..."
"When the horse was just a foal..."
"He trusted only one family."
Alejandro immediately barked,
"Enough!"
His voice exploded across the ranch.
The old man instantly fell silent.
But Elena had already heard.
She slowly turned toward Alejandro.
"Why did you stop him?"
Alejandro smiled again.
Cold.
Controlled.
Dangerous.
"Because old men remember too many fairy tales."
Then he looked toward his armed guards.
Their hands quietly moved toward their weapons.
Several people noticed.
Nobody dared speak.
Elena ignored them.
Instead...
She gently touched the horse's neck.
Hidden beneath its thick mane...
Her fingers found something unexpected.
An old scar.
Exactly where her father once told her a frightened foal had nearly died after getting trapped in barbed wire.
Her heart stopped.
No...
It couldn't be.
Unless...
Her father had been telling the truth all these years.
She slowly looked back at Alejandro.
"My father raised this horse."
Silence.
Nobody moved.
Nobody blinked.
Alejandro laughed.
A loud...
Cruel...
Mocking laugh.
"Your father?"
"The poor farmer named Miguel?"
"He never owned anything worth remembering."
Elena's voice became frighteningly calm.
"He didn't lose El Diablo."
"He said someone stole him."
The smile disappeared from Alejandro's face.
Several older ranch workers quietly lowered their heads.
One crossed himself.
Another looked away in shame.
The truth they had buried for a decade...
Was beginning to crawl back into the sunlight.
Alejandro stepped forward.
His eyes were darker than ever.
"You should have taken the money..."
"And walked away."
Then he whispered quietly enough that only Elena could hear.
"Now I'll have to make sure your father never wakes up from that surgery."
Elena froze.
How could he know about the hospital?
How could he know the exact day of the operation?
Before she could answer...
A black SUV sped through the ranch gate at full speed.
Its tires screamed across the dirt.
Four men in dark suits jumped out.
One of them held a sealed envelope.
He ignored Alejandro completely...
Walked straight toward Elena...
And respectfully said,
"Miss Elena..."
"We've been searching for you for twelve years."
May you like
The entire ranch fell silent.
Even Don Alejandro suddenly looked terrified.
