Chapter 12 - THE MORNING AUDITThe morning sun broke over Central Park, casting long, golden fingers across the frost-covered grass where Lucas and Ember had played games of imagination just weeks prior.

A sleek black town car pulled up to the grand iron gates of the Thornton estate. The gates swung open automatically, recognizing the vehicle’s encrypted transponder before the security guard could even push the manual release button.

Liam stepped out of the backseat. He wore a tailored charcoal overcoat, his posture upright and severe, carrying the unmistakable air of a chief executive stepping into a hostile acquisition.

Maxwell was waiting for him on the front porch steps, holding a cup of black coffee.

“You’re up early, Liam,” Maxwell said, his voice level and devoid of anger.

Liam walked up the stone steps, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the granite. He didn't smile, but the predatory coldness in his eyes was replaced by a strange, reflective curiosity.

“Property audits require precision, Mr. Thornton,” Liam replied, stopping two steps below him. “And I wanted to inspect the grounds before the municipal real estate board officially files the zoning changes.”

“What zoning changes?” Maxwell asked, narrowing his eyes.

“Central Park South and the surrounding blocks are slated for a massive civic revitalization project,” Liam said smoothly. “Which means the old maple tree where your son sits, the playground where the children play, and this entire estate are part of a multi-million-dollar trust dedicated to permanent public preservation.”

Maxwell stared at him. “Preservation? You’re giving it back to the public?”

“I’m not giving it back,” Liam corrected quietly. “I’m securing it so no one else can ever corporate-strip it the way your father did to my family thirty years ago.”

Before Maxwell could respond, the front door swung open, and Ember bounded out onto the porch, clutching a wooden toy sword in one hand. She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw Liam.

“Hey!” Ember said, crossing her arms and narrowing her eyes. “You’re that smart kid who helped us at the warehouse.”

Liam looked down at her, and for a fleeting second, the immaculate CEO mask cracked, revealing the lonely, brilliant child hidden beneath the tailored clothes.

“I am,” Liam said simply.

“Good,” Ember grinned, thrusting the toy sword toward his chest. “Because Lucas says we need a dragon for our new quest today, and you have the right coat for it.”
