Chapter 9 - THE UNSEEN THREATThat evening, the Thornton estate was bathed in the warm, golden glow of indoor lighting. A fire cracked in the grand marble fireplace of the living room, casting dancing shadows across the Persian rugs.

Lucas and Ember were upstairs playing board games with Martha, their laughter drifting faintly down the grand staircase.
Maxwell sat at his desk in the study, reviewing the final legal dissolution of the adoption syndicate’s corporate shell companies. Alistair Vance and Evelyn were awaiting federal trial in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, denied bail due to flight risk.
The threat was over. The nightmare had ended.
And yet, as Maxwell reached out to turn off his desk lamp, his fingers brushed against a small, unmarked envelope resting right beside the keyboard.
He hadn't heard the study door open. The smart-home security cameras showed no motion in the hallway.
With a slow, cautious movement, Maxwell picked up the envelope and tore open the flap.
Inside was a single polaroid photograph. It was a picture taken just this afternoon in Central Park—a close-up shot of Lucas and Ember laughing together under the maple tree. But scrawled across the back of the photo in black ink was a chilling message:

“You saved the girl, Maxwell. But you forgot to check who owns the land beneath your feet.”
Maxwell’s breath caught in his throat. He flipped the photo over, noticing a small watermark on the bottom corner: a corporate logo belonging to Vance Global Holdings—a parent conglomerate he had never heard of, controlling over forty percent of municipal real estate in the city.
