Chapter 20 - THE LEGACY OF LIGHTThe snow continued to fall gently outside, wrapping the city in a blanket of absolute peace.

In the front yard, Ember threw a snowball that caught Lucas squarely on the shoulder. Lucas laughed, stumbled slightly on his crutches, and retaliated with a clumsy, joyful toss of his own, while Clara cheered them on from the porch with a steaming mug of hot cocoa.

Maxwell looked at Liam. “Are you staying for dinner? Martha made pot roast, and she’s been threatening to teach you how to play checkers.”

Liam hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking out at the laughter on the snowy lawn. The cold, impenetrable shell that had protected him through years of loneliness finally melted away entirely.

“Only if I get to play black pieces,” Liam said quietly.

“Deal,” Maxwell laughed, clapping him on the back.

The billionaire, the paralyzed boy, the red-haired foster girl, and the boy who had once been a ghost in the system walked into the dining room together. The door closed softly behind them, locking out the cold, the shadows, and the past, leaving only the warmth of a family built not by blood, but by the courage to see each other in the dark.
