Chapter 15 - THE GHOST IN THE ARCHIVESBy late afternoon, the boardroom had emptied, leaving only Maxwell and Liam alone at the large glass table.

The city lights outside were just beginning to flicker on, painting the towering skyscrapers in a brilliant grid of amber and neon.

Maxwell poured two cups of black coffee from the side credenza, walking over and placing one cup gently beside Liam’s tablet.

“You didn't have to do that, you know,” Maxwell said quietly, leaning against the edge of the glass table. “The board would have folded within a week under federal pressure anyway.”

“Pendelton was a liability,” Liam replied, taking a slow sip of the coffee. “He represented the exact corporate rot that destroyed my family thirty years ago. Some cancers need to be excised completely.”

Maxwell looked at the young boy—so brilliant, so damaged, and yet carrying the weight of an entire empire on shoulders that should have been carrying schoolbooks.

“You’ve spent your entire life plotting revenge, Liam,” Maxwell said, his voice warm with a quiet, paternal empathy. “You built an empire, dismantled a syndicate, and reclaimed your legacy. But what happens tomorrow? When there are no more enemies left to fight?”

Liam went still. The rhythmic tapping of his fingers against the table stopped instantly.

For the first time since they had met, the boy looked uncertain—not a CEO facing a hostile takeover, but a child standing at the edge of an unknown future.

“I don't know,” Liam admitted softly.

“Then figure it out,” Maxwell said, placing a steady hand on the boy’s shoulder. “You don't have to carry the ledger alone anymore, Liam. You’re allowed to just be a kid.”
