Chapter 4 - THE MIDNIGHT HEISTThe clock on the mahogany desk in Maxwell’s penthouse struck midnight.

The penthouse was silent, save for the hum of the multi-screen security monitors. Lucas had cried himself to sleep after hours of begging his father to save his friend. Maxwell hadn't slept a wink. He sat in his leather chair, staring at a downloaded PDF file of Ember’s state file that a friendly, bribed clerk had leaked to him an hour earlier.

The file contained a chilling detail: the “Boston family” adopting Ember didn't exist in any standard public directory. The adoption broker was an offshore shell corporation with ties to illegal surrogate trafficking and high-net-worth identity laundering.

Ember wasn't being adopted. She was being harvested.

Maxwell’s phone buzzed violently across the desk. It was a text message from an unknown number containing a single address: The St. Jude Emergency Transit Shelter, Pier 42, Warehouse B.

Without hesitation, Maxwell stood up, unlatched his floor safe, and pulled out a heavy, matte-black passport case and a secured satellite phone. He didn't call the police; he knew the bureaucracy was entirely compromised by whoever was funding the shelter network.

He drove his own armored car through the slick, rain-drenched midnight streets of the city. The wind howled off the harbor, whipping whitecaps against the concrete pylons of Pier 42.

As he pulled up to Warehouse B, he saw a single gray transport van parked by the loading bay.

And standing right beside the driver’s side door, arguing fiercely with a heavyset security guard, was Martha Reynolds.
