Chapter 18 - THE MIRACLE IN THE GARDENThe ambient party music seemed to fade into a distant hum.

Ember dropped her plate of cupcakes. The ceramic plate shattered against the hardwood floor with a sharp crack, but neither she nor Clara flinched.

“Grandma?” Ember whispered, the word escaping her lips like a fragile breath of wind.

Clara dropped to her knees, opening her arms wide. “My sweet, wild flame… you’re so big.”

Ember didn't hesitate. She sprinted across the room, throwing herself into her grandmother’s arms, sobbing tears of pure, unadulterated joy as they held each other tightly against the cold glass of the French doors.

Maxwell turned his head away for a second, feeling a thick knot form in his throat. He looked across the room and caught Liam’s gaze near the bookshelf.

Liam had orchestrated the takedown of the syndicate, but even his vast intelligence network hadn't accounted for this: that Clara Sullivan had survived the underground purge.

Liam walked over quietly, stopping beside Maxwell.

“Did you know she was alive?” Maxwell asked quietly, his eyes still fixed on Ember and her grandmother.

“My algorithms searched for financial assets, corporate shells, and legal records,” Liam replied softly, his usual cold composure slipping just a fraction. “I didn't think to search the state psychiatric wards where Alistair buried his political inconveniences.”

“Not everything can be calculated on a spreadsheet, Liam,” Maxwell said, clapping a firm, warm hand onto the boy’s shoulder. “Sometimes the best discoveries are the ones you never planned for.”
