Six months after the gala, Brookfield Academy held its annual spring academic assembly in the exact same ballroom where my place card had once been relegated to the back of the room. This time, there was no drama, no smuggled mistresses, and no desperate text messages from twenty feet away.

When Noah’s name was called for the honor roll, the applause was deafening. I sat in the front row, right beside Table Seven, where my name was printed boldly, permanently, and rightfully at the very center of the family section.

As Noah walked across the stage to receive his medal, he didn't look down at the carpet or glance anxiously toward the back doors. He looked straight into the audience, found my eyes, and gave a proud, confident nod.

After the ceremony ended, we walked out into the crisp spring air together. My phone buzzed in my purse—a notification from an unknown number. I didn't even bother to open it; I simply swiped it away, archived the digital ghost of my past, and dropped the phone back into my bag.

I didn't need to look back, because for the first time in eighteen years, I wasn't carrying anyone else's weight, keeping anyone else's secrets, or hiding in anyone else's shadow. I was just standing in the sunlight, exactly where I belonged.
