Chapter 14 - The College Prospectus

By spring, our dining room table was buried under college brochures, campus tour maps, and financial aid worksheets. Noah had applied to three major universities for structural engineering, a field he chose entirely on his own merits and passion.

When the thick acceptance packet from Northwestern University arrived in the mail with a partial merit scholarship, Noah let out a roar that brought our golden retriever sprinting into the hallway.

"I got in! Mom, look, I actually got in!" he shouted, waving the heavy cardstock letter in the air before lifting me off my feet in a bear hug.

"I knew you would, sweetheart," I laughed, tears pricking the corners of my eyes as he set me down. "You earned every single line of this."

Later that evening, Noah insisted we celebrate by ordering our favorite takeout and sitting on the living room floor. As we toasted with sparkling cider, Noah looked down at the acceptance letter and then up at me with a quiet, solemn maturity.

"Mom... I want to tell Dad about Northwestern," Noah said, his voice entirely steady. "Not because I want his approval, and not because I feel like I have to. But because I want him to know that I did this despite everything he tried to do."

"Do you want me to help you draft the message or be there when you tell him?" I asked gently.

Noah shook his head, a small, proud smile touching his lips. "No. I’ve got this."

It was the ultimate measure of his healing. He no longer needed me to shield him from his father's gravitational pull because he had finally realized that his father possessed no gravity left at all.
