Chapter 8 - The Table Turned

Sabrina stood up, her face mottled with humiliation, and glared at Nathan with undisguised venom. "You lied to us," she spat, ripping her diamond promise ring off her finger and flinging it directly into his chest. "You said your divorce was clean, you said you had everything under control!"
She turned on her heel and pushed past the crowd, fleeing out the back exit while flashbulbs from local society bloggers—tipped off by my legal team—flashed mercilessly in her face.
Nathan looked around the room, desperately seeking a familiar face, a shred of pity, or a lifeline. His eyes landed on me. Standing twenty feet away, exactly where he had tried to banish me weeks ago, I raised my glass to him in a silent, mocking toast.
"Claire," he whispered, taking a desperate step toward me. "Claire, please... we built this together. You can't let them destroy me. We have a history—"

"Don't make Noah choose, Nathan," I echoed his exact words back to him, my voice dripping with ice. "Except this time, nobody is choosing you."
Just then, two security guards stepped forward, gently but firmly placing their hands on Nathan’s shoulders to escort him off the premises before he could cause any further disturbance to the school’s premier charity event. He didn't fight back; he just shrank into himself, a hollowed-out shell of the arrogant man who thought he could erase eighteen years of devotion with a seating chart.
