Chapter 20 - The Unshakable Seating Chart

Back home, the house was remarkably peaceful. The golden retriever trotted out to greet me in the entryway, tail wagging, as I dropped my keys onto the wooden foyer table—right beside a blank, empty calendar that I hadn't filled out with anyone else's obligations.

I walked into the kitchen, poured myself a steaming cup of Earl Grey tea, and carried it out onto the back patio. The sun was dipping below the horizon, painting the sky in brilliant strokes of amber, violet, and deep indigo.

I sat down in the wooden Adirondack chair, wrapped my hands around the warm ceramic mug, and looked out across the lawn where the dogwood trees swayed gently in the evening breeze. There was no cold bowl of soup left upstairs. There was no mistress waiting in the wings, no corporate conspiracy hanging over my head, and no malicious husband trying to rewrite my place in the world.

My name wasn't hidden at the back of a ballroom anymore, and it wasn't subject to anyone else's approval or betrayal. It was written in indelible ink across my own life, my own choices, and my own unshakeable peace.

I took a slow, deep sip of tea, smiled into the fading twilight, and settled comfortably into the only seat that had ever truly mattered: my own.
