Chapter 4 - Noah’s Breaking Point

That evening, Noah came home early from school. He didn't drop his backpack in the foyer; he carried it into the kitchen, sat down at the island, and buried his face in his hands.

"Mom, Dad called me during fifth period," Noah muffled through his palms. "He told me I need to talk to Dr. Mercer tomorrow. He gave me a list of things to say—about how great Sabrina is, and how much happier he is now, and how you’re the one who’s being vindictive."

I walked over, pulled out the stool next to him, and gently lifted his chin so he had to look me in the eye. "And what did you tell him, Noah?"

"I told him no," Noah whispered, a tear finally breaking free and tracking down his cheek. "And then he screamed at me. He said I was ruining his life, just like you did. He told me if I don't cooperate with the evaluator, he’s going to pull me out of Brookfield Academy and send me to board school in Vermont before the semester ends."

The maternal rage that surged through me was cold, lethal, and absolute. Nathan was willing to sacrifice his own son's mental health, friendships, and stability just to protect his public image and his corporate ascension with Sabrina's family.

"Listen to me very carefully," I said, keeping my voice fierce and steady. "You are never going to boarding school in Vermont. You are never going to be forced to lie for your father again. Tomorrow during the evaluation, you are going to tell Dr. Mercer the absolute truth about every single threat, every text, and every forced performance. And you are going to do it knowing that your mother has your back, absolute and unbreakable."

Noah exhaled a breath he seemed to have been holding for six months. He threw his arms around my neck, sobbing into my shoulder, and for the first time in years, I felt like the foundation beneath our feet was finally real.
