Chapter 16 - The Federal Indictment

Two weeks before Noah’s high school graduation, the headline hit the local business journal: “Former Sterling & Vance Executive Indicted on Federal Wire Fraud and Securities Charges.”
The article detailed how Nathan had systematically manipulated client accounts and falsified corporate compliance records in collusion with unverified shell entities—a polite journalistic way of saying he had tried to cover his tracks with the Cole family trust and left a neon-lit paper trail straight to a federal holding cell.
Marcus Vance called me with the final legal update. "Claire, the federal prosecutor has offered him a plea deal: five years in a federal penitentiary with a reduced sentence if he cooperates fully and turns over his remaining hidden assets. The divorce settlement we locked in last year is completely bulletproof. His creditors are stripping whatever is left of his accounts."
"Is he going to take the plea?" I asked, looking out the kitchen window at the blooming dogwood trees in our front yard.

"He doesn't have a choice," Marcus replied. "His new public defender told him fighting it would result in a ten-year sentence. Nathan’s corporate empire ended the day he decided to humiliate you at that school banquet and leave a paper trail with the athletic department."
It was a staggering reminder of how fragile arrogance truly is. Nathan had thrown away an eighteen-year marriage, a loyal wife, and a devoted son for a corporate ladder built on stolen rungs and a mistress who abandoned him the moment the accounts were frozen.
