Chapter 12 - The Ghost of Sterling & Vance

The legal shockwaves of Nathan’s corporate fraud continued to ripple through the financial district long after his termination. Sterling & Vance Financial was forced into a massive internal restructuring following the discovery that Arthur Cole’s family trust had been funneled through shell companies to inflate quarterly earnings unlawfully.

One rainy Thursday afternoon, my attorney Marcus Vance called me with an update that made me pause over my morning coffee.

"Claire, you remember the forensic audit we ran on Nathan’s private accounts?" Marcus asked, his voice laced with amusement. "Well, federal regulators took a deeper look at the paper trail. It turns out Nathan wasn't just hiding assets from your divorce—he was actively forging corporate compliance signatures to shield Sabrina’s family from liability when the market tanked last year."

"Is he facing criminal charges?" I asked, gripping the ceramic mug tighter.

"Let's just say the U.S. Attorney’s office is currently reviewing a federal indictment for securities fraud and wire tampering," Marcus chuckled dryly. "If the grand jury hands down a true bill next month, your ex-husband might be trading that rented sedan for an orange jumpsuit. The man literally built a house of cards on a swamp and invited a hurricane to live in it."

I thanked Marcus and hung up. There was no surge of triumphant glee, only a profound, grounding sense of closure. The man who had once reduced me to background noise, who had tried to write me out of our son's life with a five-word email, had been systematically dismantled by the very hubris that made him think he was untouchable.
