Chapter 6 - The Charity Gala Trap

Three weeks later, the annual Brookfield Academy Autumn Charity Gala arrived—an event where the town's elite gathered in black tie to auction off vacation homes and pretend their private lives weren't dripping in scandal. Nathan, completely unaware that Dr. Mercer’s report had already been submitted to the family court judge, assumed he could brazenly rehabilitate his image by walking the red carpet hand-in-hand with Sabrina Cole.

I arrived alone, wearing a midnight-blue velvet gown that cost a fraction of Sabrina's cream silk disaster, but fit me like custom armor. As I stepped into the grand ballroom, the murmurs started immediately. Society gossips whispered behind crystal flutes, their eyes darting between me and Table One—where Nathan and Sabrina sat front and center, basking in the delusion that they had won.

Nathan spotted me near the dessert bar. His jaw clenched, and he excused himself from a conversation with the headmaster, marching across the polished marble floor toward me.

"What are you doing here, Claire?" Nathan hissed, his face flushed with champagne and panic. "This is a donor-exclusive event. Your name isn't even on the active gala roster anymore—I made sure of that."

"Oh, Nathan," I smiled, swirling my sparkling water. "Did you really think the board of trustees would leave my name off the roster after I made a personal donation matching the entire athletic department’s annual budget?"

Before he could process that, the ballroom's overhead chandeliers flickered, and the headmaster walked up to the central microphone on the stage, tapping it for attention.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen of Brookfield Academy," the headmaster’s voice echoed through the hall. "Before we begin our live auction, we have a special recognition tonight. Due to an extraordinary philanthropic contribution, and an administrative correction regarding institutional integrity, we are dedicating tonight’s primary scholarship fund in honor of Mrs. Claire Sterling."

The room erupted into polite, then thunderous applause. Nathan froze, his face draining of all color as he realized the trap had snapped shut.
