Chapter 3 - The Secret Investor

Two days later, my divorce attorney, Marcus Vance—a shark who specialized in high-net-worth dissolution—called me into his office with a stack of forensic accounting reports that made my breath catch.
"Claire, your husband has been playing a very dangerous game," Marcus said, spinning a laptop around to show me a web of offshore asset transfers and corporate shell companies. "When you separated, he tried to hide his liquid capital to minimize spousal support and child custody financial disclosures. But look at who funded his latest shell company, 'Apex Holdings': Sabrina Cole's family trust."
The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Sabrina wasn't just a mid-level marketing coordinator or a casual mistress. Her family owned a controlling stake in Cole Industries, one of Nathan's biggest corporate clients. The affair wasn't a mid-life crisis; it was a hostile corporate merger disguised as a romance. Nathan had traded our marriage for a guaranteed seat on the board of directors, and he was using our son, Noah, as a prop to prove to the Cole family—and the court—that he was a stable, family-oriented patriarch ready to step into an executive partnership.
"Can we use this?" I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"Not only can we use it, we can blow his entire corporate career wide open," Marcus smiled, his eyes glinting behind his wire-rimmed glasses. "If we prove he committed corporate fraud by funneling Sterling & Vance client accounts into an unverified shell company with an undeclared conflict of interest—Sabrina's family trust—he won't just lose the custody battle. He’ll lose his job, his license, and every penny he tried to hide from you."
"Do it," I said. "Every last bit of it."
