Chapter 5 - The Evaluation Room

The office of Dr. Evelyn Mercer smelled faintly of aged leather and peppermint tea. When Noah walked out of her inner office after a grueling two-hour interview, his face was pale, but his shoulders were squared. He looked at me, gave a microscopic nod, and whispered, "I told her everything, Mom. Even about the Vermont threat."

"Thank you, sweetheart," I murmured, kissing the top of his head. "Go wait in the car. I’m next."

When I walked into Dr. Mercer’s office, the clinical evaluator didn't look like an impartial judge anymore; she looked like a prosecutor who had just uncovered a major crime. She gestured to the leather armchair opposite her desk, where a thick folder stamped with confidential markers lay open.

"Mrs. Sterling, in my fifteen years of custody evaluations, I have rarely seen a more egregious pattern of parental alienation, psychological coercion, and institutional manipulation," Dr. Mercer began without preamble. "Mr. Sterling submitted a sworn affidavit this morning claiming total innocence and blaming you for all familial friction. However, your son’s testimony, combined with the school audit and the financial records your attorney just served us, paints a very different picture."

She slid a document across the desk. It was an emergency addendum to her final report, recommending immediate sole legal and physical custody to me, a mandatory restraining order preventing Nathan from contacting Noah without supervision, and a formal notification sent to the Brookfield Academy disciplinary board regarding fraudulent administrative requests.

"Your husband’s life is currently imploding, Mrs. Sterling," Drop Mercer said quietly. "And honestly? He built every brick of the wall that’s about to crush him."
