Chapter 11 - The Rotor Blade EchoThe rhythmic thwack of helicopter blades faded into the howling autumn wind, leaving behind an unnatural, suffocating silence in Sophie’s ruined nursery. Shards of safety glass caught the pale moonlight, glittering like cruel stars across the lavender carpet. Grant Mercer stood frozen by the shattered window frame,

Mara remained kneeling beside the empty bed. Her fingers clutched the small, blood-stained rabbit plushie Sophie had refused to sleep without. For a horrifying moment, she didn’t make a sound. There were no screams, no frantic thrashing—just the absolute stillness of a predator whose cub had been torn from its den.
"They didn't come for ransom," Mara said, her voice dropping into a register so chillingly calm it made the hairs on the back of Grant's neck stand up. She slowly rose to her feet, her eyes fixed on the empty space where her daughter had slept moments before. "If they wanted money, they would have sent a courier or encrypted demand hours ago. This is about total eradication."
Grant turned away from the window, his chest heaving with a suffocating fury. "The note left in the study... it mentioned an agency. Not the local syndicate, not Richard’s network. Something deeper."
"The Vanguard," Mara whispered, walking slowly toward him. The shadows in the room seemed to bend around her silhouette, turning the once-gentle mother into an architectural weapon of vengeance. "An elite shadow-contractor syndicate that handles state-level intelligence disappearances. Richard was just a regional accountant for them. When we dismantled his cell, we kicked a hornets' nest belonging to people who write the laws nations follow."
"Then we hunt them down," Grant growled, his voice vibrating with absolute menace. He reached down and picked up the silver music box resting on the windowsill. The mechanism was still ticking down its final, strained notes. "Every single asset I own—every dollar, every building, every server—is going toward burning their entire operation to ash."

Mara shook her head slowly, taking the music box from his hand. She opened the secret compartment beneath the velvet lining—a compartment Grant hadn't even known existed after all these years. Inside lay a micro-film cartridge and a handwritten set of GPS coordinates deep within the freezing fjords of Norway.
"We don't hunt them in the boardroom anymore, Grant," Mara said, her gaze locking onto his with terrifying clarity. "We go off the grid. Pack your weapons. We're going to war."
