Chapter 29 - The Quiet Between the TidesMonths passed into a peaceful, unbroken rhythm. The global shockwaves of the Vanguard collapse gradually faded into history textbooks and congressional archives, replaced by the mundane, beautiful routines of everyday life.

He spent his days not in boardrooms or behind encrypted terminals, but walking along the rocky Maine coastline with Mara and Sophie, collecting smooth sea-glass, skipping flat stones across the tide pools, and listening to the rhythmic roar of the Atlantic.

Mara had finally laid down the heavy armor of the covert operative. The shadows that had once clung to her posture were gone, replaced by the vibrant, grounded warmth of a mother who was reclaiming every stolen moment of her daughter's childhood. One crisp November evening, after Sophie had finally fallen fast asleep clutching her stuffed rabbit, Grant and Mara sat alone in the dim library, bathed in the amber glow of the reading lamps. The heavy oak door was open, letting in the faint, comforting sound of the wind rustling through the pines outside.

Grant looked up from a book he wasn't really reading, watching Mara as she traced the edge of the silver music box sitting on the mahogany coffee table.

"Penny for your thoughts," Grant said softly, breaking the quiet.

Mara looked up, her dark eyes warm and luminous in the lamplight. "I was just thinking about Nora. And about all the people out there still waiting in the dark for someone to ask the right question."

Mara smiled, reaching out to cup his cheek with her palm. "And it’s spinning because you never stopped believing in the music, Grant."
