Chapter 18 - The Descent into FireThe service corridor below was pitch black, lit only by the intermittent spark of severed electrical cables dangling from the damp ceiling. Water dripped rhythmically into puddles of stagnant oil, creating an eerie, hollow symphony that echoed through the dark.

Mara moved like a shadow, hugging the concrete wall as she navigated the narrow utility tunnel. Above her, she could hear the mechanical hum of automated security turrets tracking movement along the primary catwalks. She dropped flat onto her stomach, crawling silently through a narrow drainage pipe that bypassed the primary kill-zone entirely.

11:05... 11:04...

The countdown echoed through her comm-piece, linked directly to the terminal upstairs. Every second felt like an eternity.

She reached the end of the pipe and kicked open the rusted access grate, dropping silently into the reactor sub-level. The air here was suffocatingly hot, smelling of burning insulation and pressurized steam. In the center of the cavernous room stood the massive, cylindrical housing of the emergency reactor core, its warning lights flashing a blinding yellow.

Beside the core was the manual hydraulic valve—a massive, iron wheel covered in frost and rust, connected to a complex network of copper pipes that pulsed with dangerous kinetic energy.

Mara rushed to the wheel, grabbing the iron spokes with both hands and throwing her entire body weight into turning it.

Nothing. The valve was sealed shut by years of corrosion and extreme pressure.

"Come on," she gritted her teeth, straining every muscle in her arms as her fingers slipped against the frozen metal.

From the shadows above, the heavy metallic click of a turret locking into position rang out. A red laser sight swept across the concrete floor, stopping directly on Mara's chest.
