Chapter 26 - The Global Broadcast"Thirty seconds!" Nora shouted over the deafening blare of the red emergency klaxons.

Inside the corridor, Mara’s magazine clicked empty. With practiced, lethal fluidity, she dropped the mag, slammed a fresh one into her rifle, and fired two rapid rounds through the smoke, dropping the advancing vanguard leader just as he raised his weapon. But the sheer weight of numbers was beginning to overwhelm her position. Two more operatives rounded the corner, their carbines tracking toward her stance.
Suddenly, Grant vaulted past the narrowing bulkhead door, his rifle roaring in a sustained, controlled burst that caught both operatives in their ceramic plates, sending them crashing hard against the steel wall.
"Get back inside!" Grant roared, grabbing Mara by the tactical webbing of her vest and hauling her backward into the core chamber just as the massive steel bulkhead doors slammed shut completely, sealing off the hallway with a deafening pneumatic crash.
"Download complete!" Nora yelled triumphantly, ripping her interface cable out of the master bus and slamming the portable data-drive into her tactical pouch. "The entire archive has just been broadcasted simultaneously to every major news outlet, international intelligence database, and Interpol terminal on the planet. Director Elias Voss is officially a ghost with no place left to hide."
Before they could catch their breath, the ceiling vents above them hissed open, and a thick, sweet-smelling white vapor began to pour rapidly into the room.
"Halon gas!" Mara coughed, covering her nose and mouth with her sleeve. "They're flooding the chamber to incapacitate us!"
Grant didn't hesitate. He grabbed the heavy steel maintenance ladder attached to the server racks, swung his rifle butt hard against the reinforced glass skylight overhead, and shattered it with a shower of jagged shards.

"Up! Now!" Grant shouted, hoisting Mara toward the opening.
One by one, fighting against the thickening cloud of paralyzing gas, they hauled themselves through the narrow skylight into the upper maintenance shafts just as the secure chamber below was completely swallowed by the white fog.
