Grant and Mara sat on the veranda of their private country estate, watching Sophie chase golden retrievers across the sun-drenched lawn. The lavender breeze carried the scent of autumn, crisp and clean, free of ghosts.
"Nora left this morning," Mara said softly, sipping her tea.
Grant turned to look at his wife, his hand resting over hers on the glass table. "Where did she go? The agency said she was a ghost, an independent contractor with no permanent file."
"She said her job was finished," Mara replied, her eyes distant with a knowing warmth. "People like Nora don't settle down easily. They live in the spaces between worlds, cleaning up messes left behind by men like us."
Grant looked down at the silver music box sitting between them. The dented corner caught the midday light, glowing with a quiet, enduring permanence. He reached out and traced the familiar tooth mark left by Sophie's teething years ago.
