Chapter 17 - The Countdown BeginsEighteen minutes.

The timer on the central console pulsed like a mechanical heartbeat, casting an eerie, crimson glow across the steel walls of the observation room. Sophie pressed her face against the bulletproof glass on the other side, her small frame shivering as she watched her parents trapped outside.

"There has to be a hardwire override," Grant muttered, his hands flying frantically across the terminal keyboard, ignoring the sparks of static electricity snapping against his fingertips. "Every system built by man has a physical circuit breaker."

"Not this one," Mara said coldly, kneeling beside the control panel and pulling a heavy tactical knife from her belt. She began unscrewing the heavy steel housing panel beneath the desk. "Victor built this bunker on Cold War Soviet schematics. The self-destruct mechanism isn't digital—it's tied to an analog hydraulic pressure valve located in the central reactor sub-level."

Grant stopped typing and looked up at her, horror dawning in his eyes. "The reactor sub-level? That's two stories down through a corridor rigged with motion-sensitive turrets."

"Which means one of us has to go down there and manually jam the valve, while the other stays here to keep the containment shield from frying Sophie's cell with an electromagnetic pulse," Mara said, her eyes meeting his with absolute, unwavering resolve.

"No," Grant shook his head violently, stepping toward her. "I'm not losing you again, Mara. I'm going down there."

"You don't know the hydraulic architecture of Soviet-era sub-levels, Grant," she said softly, reaching out to press her palm against his cheek, her skin warm despite the freezing air. "I do. You stay here. Talk to Sophie. Keep her calm. Let me finish what we started five years ago."

Before Grant could protest, Mara leaned up, kissed him hard and fast on the lips, and turned toward the heavy metal service hatch leading down into the dark abyss of the lower levels.

"Mom!" Sophie’s muffled cry echoed through the glass partition.

Mara didn't look back. She slipped through the hatch, pulling the heavy steel door shut behind her, leaving Grant alone in the red-tinted room as the countdown clock ticked relentlessly downward: 14:20... 14:19...
